Raccoon makes habit out of scaling skyscrapers

Late Tuesday morning, June 12, maintenance employees of St. Paul's Town Square building tried to tempt the raccoon down with a long pole, but the critter was having none of it.

An effort to build a makeshift ramp for it to climb down didn't work and the spooked raccoon instead made its way to the UBS Tower and began going up.

Snacking on smelly, wet cat food, the raccoon that offered a nation a split-second of respite sat in a cage atop UBS Plaza, whose final, 23rd story it had scaled about 3 a.m.

As the animal made its way to the top, MPR reporters documented the climb. On a window ledge on the 22nd floor, it paused to rest.

There is not a whole lot that St. Paul Animal Control can do because a rescue mission would be too unsafe for both the raccoon and the workers. "We're working with staff & building owner to find a way to help #MPRraccoon without further endangering it or staff by scaring or making it feel threatened". "We're hoping it gets to the top so we can set a trap for it there".

St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter spun its adventure as a positive for the city's tourism industry - proof that even a raccoon knew Minnesota's capital "is a great place to reach for higher heights". At that point, the lure of cat food apparently enticed it into the trap.

Meanwhile, someone who also is decidedly not the raccoon started a rival Twitter account.

When a racoon in the USA city of St Paul, Minnesota started scaling up a UBS Tower building - it was perched on the ledge of the 23rd floor at one point - it instantly became an Internet sensation as a source of amusement and anxiety for workers and social media users alike.

"Pray for #mprraccoon", one Twitter user said.

Many expressed concern for the raccoon's safety - wondering aloud about possible rescue scenarios. St. Paul Animal Control believed it may have been there all night before it started heading skyward.
