Pope Francis accepts resignations of three Chilean bishops

Barros denied the allegations, but he joined Chilean 30 active bishops who have recently suggested to the Pope to resign.

The report prompted Francis to summon all of Chile's Catholic hierarchy to an unprecedented summit last month, where they all offered their resignations.

The June 11 communique from the Vatican said that Bishop Jorge Enrique Conchua Cayuqueo, a Franciscan and auxiliary bishop of Santiago, will now also serve as apostolic administrator for the Osorno diocese.

Acknowledging that the pope's program "is very tight", Martin added, "We will find a way in which the pope will be able to address the concerns of all of those people", he said.

Archbishop Charles Scicluna of Malta and Father Jordi Bertomeu Farnos were set to visit the Diocese of Osorno "with the aim of advancing the process of reparation and healing of abuse victims", the Vatican said in a statement on May 31.

Some of the victims have accused Cardinal Francisco Javier Errazuriz, a key adviser to Francis, of ignoring and helping to cover up Karadima's abuses.

Pope Francis attends a meeting with faithful of the diocese of Rome at Saint John Lateran Basilica in Rome. Of the three, only 61-year-old Barros is below the retirement age of 75.

"The band of delinquent bishops ... begins to disintegrate today". They questioned Barros' suitability to lead given he had been a top lieutenant of Chile's most notorious predator priest and had been accused by victims of witnessing and ignoring their abuse.

The two investigators will meet Wednesday with Canon law experts from Chilean dioceses who will provide "technical and legal assistance" in order to "provide adequate responses to each case of child sexual abuse committed by clerics or religious", Scicluna told reporters.

In a letter to Chileans released at the end of last month, the pontiff voiced "shame" that the Catholic Church failed "to listen and react in time" to the allegations of sexual abuse by Chilean clergy.

In 2011, Fr Karadima was sentenced to a life of prayer and penance by the Vatican after he was found guilty of sexually abusing boys.

The Pope continued to defend his appointment, telling reporters: "The day they bring me proof against Bishop Barros, I will speak". Juan Carlos Cruz, one of the survivors, explained the Pope not only said sorry but admitted that he, Francis, had personally been "part of the problem".

The leader of the Roman Catholic Church accepted the resignation of Bishop Juan Barros as well as those of two others in Chile, Archbishop Cristián Caro Cordero of Puerto Montt and Bishop Gonzalo Duarte García de Cortázar of Valparaíso, the church announced on Monday.

During his weeklong trip through Chile and Peru in January, Francis opened with a somber apology for sexual abuse by priests.
