Organizer of infamous failed Fyre Festival charged with duping customers again

McFarland is reportedly now facing a new set of charges connected to a post-Fyre Festival ticket scam.

Billy McFarland was rearrested Tuesday and charged with earning $100,000 by selling fake tickets to exclusive fashion, music and sporting events through NYC VIP Access, a company he controlled.

McFarland has been charged with one count of wire fraud and one count of money laundering.

With his own name tarnished after Fyre Festival's implosion in April 2017, McFarland is alleged to have hired as a person referred to as "Employee-1" as the public face of NYC VIP Access, and operated the business by using email and bank accounts established by that person.

"In March of 2018, William McFarland pled guilty to defrauding investors and vendors of the Fyre Festival, but it is apparent that he did not stop there", FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge William Sweeney Jr. said in a statement. He tricked at least 15 people into buying the nonexistent tickets. He's also had to come up with $26 million to repay those festival investors he defrauded.

McFarland, 26, sold fake tickets to exclusive events, including the Met Gala and Coachella, for several months while he was awaiting sentencing for charges related to the Fyre Festival, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY. The festival was anything but the ultra-luxurious event promoted as "the cultural experience of the decade" and touted on social media by Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski and other models and celebrities. Tickets for the event cost thousands of dollars, but when attendees arrived they found poorly built tents, a lack of food and clean water and an insufficient number of public toilets.

If you're wondering what the heck is going on, since McFarland's already scheduled to be sentenced after pleading guilty in the Fyre Festival case, it appears after his initial arrest he was still trying to run scams. Each count faces up to 20 years in jail.
