Navarro apologizes for harsh comment about Canada PM

Peter Navarro, a White House trade adviser, apologized Tuesday after saying "there's a special place in hell" for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is in a trade dispute with President Donald Trump. "The problem is that in conveying that message I used language that was inappropriate". "I own that, that was my mistake, those were my words".

Peter Navarro says his job was to send a "signal of strength" after Trudeau's post-G7 news conference sent the US president into a fit of pique that threw the summit into disarray.

"This came after Trudeau had said that Canada would "move forward with retaliatory measures" starting from July 1 in response to Trump's decision to impose 25 percent trade tariffs on aluminum and steel on its closest allies Canada, Mexico, and the European Union".

Trump was furious after Trudeau had said at the end of a contentious economic summit in Quebec that he wouldn't let Canada be pushed around in trade relations with the United States. The country has rallied together, with public opinion polling showing there's wide support for Canada's retaliatory tariffs against the steel and aluminum duties that will kick in for some USA goods on July 1.

On Sunday, Navarro, who is Trump's most hawkish trade adviser, assailed Trudeau for engaging in "bad faith diplomacy" in the wake of the G-7 meeting.

"If you make a mistake, you should admit it, learn from it, don't repeat it", Navarro said. And I say, push him around? "Very dishonest & weak", he said of Trudeau.

The president said he had a "good relationship with Justin".

"PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, "US Tariffs were kind of insulting" and he 'will not be pushed around, ' " Trump tweeted on Saturday.

Navarro said he had been trying to use strong words to back Mr. Trump's trade stance but went too far.

The insults stemmed from a closing G7 press conference on Saturday in which Trudeau called United States steel and aluminum tariffs "insulting" and pledged to proceed with previously announced retaliatory tariffs. "(Trudeau) learned. You can't do that.

One particular source of his ire recently has been Canada's supply management system, which levels tariffs of up to 300 per cent on imported dairy products.

Both aides accused Trudeau of betraying Trump, a Republican, at a news conference held after the US president had departed Canada.

"From the beginning we have said that our approach would be to work for the best possible outcome but to always be prepared for the worst, to have backup plans", she said.

"Sometimes when we think about tariffs, when we think about a trade war, we lose sight of the real impact, and that's on workers", Singh told a news conference on Parliament Hill.

A recent report by the Peterson Institute for International Economics found that blanket 25-per-cent tariffs on automobile imports to the US, including auto parts, would reduce production by 1.5 per cent and could cause job losses of 195,000 in the USA over the first three years, and would affect $200 billion in US imports.
