Multi-state Salmonella outbreak connected to Walmart pre-cut melons

Kroger has announced a melon recall that will impact customers in IN and MI.

The CDC is not recommending that people avoid whole melons.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting 60 cases of Salmonella in five states including IL.

Walmart and Kroger have removed all cut melon associated with the outbreak. The list of states and stores could expand depending on the investigation.

If you bought pre-cut melon at a Walmart in Missouri, throw it away. Now.

People who reportedly fell ill, obtained their chicks and ducklings from several sources, including feed supply stores, websites, hatcheries and from relatives, the agency said. Of the 60 cases reported, 31 (66%) have been hospitalized due to illness associated with the infection.

On Friday, the grocery chain said they would be removing pre-cut cantaloupe, pre-cut watermelon, and pre-cut melon mixes.

Other states included in this outbreak include Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Ohio. Illnesses started on dates ranging from April 30, 2018 to May 28, 2018, and cases range in age from less than 1 to 97 years old. They include cramps, fever and diarrhea and while most healthy people can recover without seeking medical care, babies, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems may suffer from a more severe form of illness, the release said.
