Little girl temporarily paralyzed after tick bite

Jessica Griffin of MS posted the story of her daughter, Kailyn, to Facebook last week.

Griffin said she rushed her daughter to the hospital where doctors diagnosed her with tick paralysis. After tons of blood work and a CT of the head UMMC has ruled it as tick paralysis!

"PLEASE for the love of god check your kids for ticks!" she posted.

Griffin later shared another photo of her daughter leaving the hospital.

If someone who has been outdoors in the spring or summer months suddenly becomes weak and appears to be getting worse, tick paralysis could be the cause. The test showed that Kailyn had been suffering from tick paralysis, which is a rare disease that is believed to be caused due to tick saliva. Griffin, of Grenada, Mississippi, wrote in a Facebook post Wednesday that seemed a mixture of worry and relief. It's more common in children than it is adults! Scary is a UNDERSTATEMENT! Ticks are most active from April through September, The Washington Post has reported. If the tick is left in the victim for too long, it can lead to respiratory failure and even death.

Symptoms usually begin with numbness or tingling, fatigue or weakness.

The symptoms can occur five to seven days after the tick starts feeding.

A year ago a three-year-old girl was a victim of tick paralysis, only diagnosed after a doctor scoured her hair and found the tick embedded in her skull. Through their research that ran between January and December 2017, they found that Chicago, Boise, Dayton, Ohio, Pittsburgh, Rapid City, South Dakota, and St. Louis had the most ticks in their cities.

"I went to brush her hair to put it in a ponytail and noticed she could barely talk and when I pulled her hair back that's when I seen the tick", she added. We are being admitted to the hospital for observation and we're hoping her balance gets straightened out!

And last year, Amanda Lewis woke up and found that her 3-year-old daughter, Evelyn, couldn't stand no matter how hard the little girl tried, according to the La Grande Observer.

Once it was removed, Evelyn was walking the next day. The symptoms of the disease usually go away within 24 hours of removing the tick. Later that evening, Kailin was able to walk out of the hospital.
