Japan PM hails Trump-Kim agreement as 'first step'

Even as Pompeo staunchly defended the summit results, he was less exuberant than Trump, who tweeted on his return to the U.S. on Monday morning: "Just landed - a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office".

Trump has said he'll know within minutes whether a deal can be made to settle a standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear program. But he kept trying to reach out to North Korea, and eventually found a role as a mediator after Kim offered in January to send a delegation to the South Korean Winter Olympics.

"Our Country's biggest enemy is the Fake News so easily promulgated by fools!"

Mr Trump later promised to end "war games", with ally South Korea, a concession to Mr Kim that appeared to catch the Pentagon and Seoul government off guard and sowed confusion among Mr Trump's Republican supporters in Washington.

The document the two leaders signed did not include details of how and when North Korea would denuclearize, nor did it spell out exactly what "security guarantees" the United States would provide to North Korea.

The pair are set to meet until early afternoon, when it is hoped that they will present a joint agreement including steps for the North's abandonment of nuclear weapons.

But Trump said he secured the release of hostages, Kim's commitment to denuclearization, and the recovery of the remains of American soldiers who fell in the Korean War during the 1950s. "So is a dangerously naive president".

On Wednesday, North Korean state media said Trump had also agreed to the North's desire for a step-by-step disarmament process with corresponding USA concessions at each step, rather than immediate disarmament as the U.S. had initially sought.

And in spite of Mr Trump's announcement, Onodera said that Japan would continue its military exercises with the USA and will continue to improve defences against any possible North Korean strike.

"Before taking office people were assuming that we were going to War with North Korea", he continued.

North Korea's state media also hailed the summit as a success, including highlighting Trump's surprise announcement after the summit that the United States would stop military exercises with South Korea. "No longer - sleep well tonight!" the president wrote. Trump later interacted with media persons from across the world covering the event.

"So amusing to watch the Fake News, especially NBC and CNN", he wrote on Twitter.

Asked whether he would invite Kim to the White House, Trump said: "Absolutely, I will".

"I do trust him, yeah", Trump said. "We're not engaged in any reduction of USA forces talks, and I think we all wait until after this settles and we go forward".

While a reduction in US troops on the Korean peninsula was not on the table in discussions with Kim, Trump did say that "at some point" he wants "to get our soldiers out". The work of putting meat on the bare bones of the agreement will begin quickly, he said, and "once you start the process, it means it's pretty much over".

"President Trump appreciated that an atmosphere of peace and stability was created on the Korean Peninsula and in the region, although distressed with the extreme danger of armed clash only a few months ago, thanks to the proactive peace-loving measures taken by the respected Supreme Leader from the outset of this year", the North's state-run Korean Central News Agency said in a summary of the meeting. But no specifics of a future path were outlined.

Kelsey Davenport, the nonproliferation policy director at the Arms Control Association, which supported the Iran deal, called the summit result "mediocre".
