In the skies over Africa exploded asteroid

It shows the fiery remnants of an asteroid disintegrating in Earth's atmosphere over Botswana on Saturday night.

A boulder-sized asteroid turned into a fireball after getting into the Earth's Atmosphere and hit over a South African nation of Botswana, an African nation around 1 PM on June 2.

The International Astronomical Union confirmed the rock entered the Earth's atmosphere on June 2 and was named Asteroid 2018 LA and was estimated at between 10 to 16 feet wide.

Asteroid 2018 LA was first discovered by the NASA-funded Catalina Sky Survey operated by the University of Arizona, the agency said. But, small Asteroids similar to 2018 LA that are hard to spot would not cause major damages. As is the case for all asteroid-hunting projects, the data were quickly sent to the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which calculated a preliminary trajectory indicating the possibility of an Earth impact.

The asteroid, dubbed 2018 LA, was discovered out near the moon's orbit early Saturday morning, aiming straight for Earth. This is a third such instance of tracking small asteroids with impact trajectory. According to NASA, the asteroid was determined to be on a collision course with Earth, with impact just hours away.

"This was a much smaller object than we are tasked to detect and warn about", said NASA Planetary Defense Officer Lindley Johnson.

YouTubeNasa's Near Earth Object Centre said that Asteroid 2018 LA was travelling at 27, 738 miles per hour. This is just the 3 time that the scientists detected an asteroid emerging towards the Earth and having a direct collision event with it. That said, it can never hurt to have more telescopes and eyes pointed at the sky looking for the next space rock aiming to knock on our door - or break it down.

And While 2018 LA was detected soon before it came at our setting, there are various organizations looking for potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs) which may seriously affect life.

According to NASA, however, about 90 per cent of all asteroids larger than one kilometre have been discovered. The first was 2008 TC3, which was detected 15 hours before it broke up over northern Sudan on October 7, 2008.

In 2008, an asteroid measuring 4 metres was spotted 19 hours in advance. Astronomers have spotted, plotted, and forecasted asteroid flybys months, years, and even decades ahead of time but sometimes space rocks can be sneaky, especially when they're small.
