Donald Trump's G7 Tweets Were Depressing, Says Angela Merkel

Merkel indicated she lobbied Trump to refrain from slapping tariffs on USA vehicle imports from Europe, a measure that threatens to hit German carmakers the hardest.

"I asked for changes".

In return, Mr Trump made the French president his guest at his first White House state dinner, after which the USA president said of his visitor: "I like him a lot".

In response to Mr Trump's decision to withhold U.S. support for the summit conclusions, a senior United Kingdom government source said: "We stand by the commitments made in the G7 communique".

Trump announced in tweets following his early departure from the summit that he would refuse to sign the communiqué as a result of press conference comments by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Echoing Merkel's sentiments, French President Emmanuel Macron's office said that "international cooperation can not depend on fits of anger and a few words", according to a statement published by French public broadcaster RFI.

Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and the other leaders clashed with Trump over steel and aluminum tariffs as well as his decision to abandon a deal with Iran to limit its nuclear program. Mr Trump called him "very dishonest and weak" in a tweet after Mr Trudeau repeated criticisms of USA tariffs on imported steel and aluminium and Mr Trump's trade policies in a news conference following the Group of Seven meeting in Quebec.

The German chancellor also said she is not ready to "give up on G7" but would seek dialogue with Russian Federation and try to "work very closely" with Japan, Canada, India and China. "But if you include services in the trade balance, the USA has big surplus with Europe".

Despite Mr Trump's actions, the UK, France and Germany have insisted they will stand by the commitments made at the summit.

The US had a trade surplus with Canada of about US$7.7 billion (S$10.3 billion) in 2016, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, although Statistics Canada data show the US had a trade deficit of about US$14.6 billion. Yet after leaving the summit, Trump tweeted that he would instruct USA officials not to endorse the G-7 statement, after objecting to comments from summit host Trudeau.

"That's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada".

Trump cited national security in imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum tariffs, a move that sparked tension at last week's summit of Group of Seven leaders.

Trump left the meeting between the world's leading industrialized countries with a warning to USA allies, saying that if they don't remove trade barriers with the US then they will face consequences.
