Disputes over trade tariffs, Russian Federation overshadow G7 meeting

"As Canadians we are polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around".

President Donald Trump, whose tariff fight is overtaking the Group of Seven leaders' meeting, renewed his threats to scrap the North American Free Trade Agreement and pursue separate deals with Canada and Mexico.

The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the official's remarks about Trump.

Despite smiles and jokes for the cameras, the tension among the leaders was clear.

But while the other leaders failed to persuade Trump that his view of global trade was overly simplistic and inaccurate, the US president surprised them during a meeting on Friday by suggesting that they work toward ending all tariffs and barriers, in what would effectively be the mother-of-all free trade agreements.

Before his trip to Canada, Trump surprised everyone again, saying he would recommend the G7 states to bring Russian Federation back into the group. Tariffs will come way down.

He also defended the wisdom of his controversial tariffs, saying that the USA would win a trade war against its allies because "they do so much more business with us than we do with them".

Canada and the European Union have denounced the US tariffs as illegal and unjustified and Ottawa has proposed levies on a range of USA goods next month while the European Union has pledged its own retaliatory measures. "He is a thug using Soviet-style aggression to wage a shadow war against America, and our leaders should act like it".

Before departing the summit, Trump doubled-down on his assertions that the United States has been subjected to unfair trade duties for many years.

"The president will continue to say what he says at various occasions", Trudeau said.

"There are always other things we can work on", Trudeau said.

La Malbaie. Canada: G7 leaders, who can usually at least pretend to be the best of friends, wrapped up a two-day summit in Canada on Sunday that was marked by startlingly outspoken criticism. He said unleashing retaliatory measures "is not something I relish doing" but that he wouldn't hesitate to do so because "I will always protect Canadian workers and Canadian interests".

"So you go tariff-free, you go subsidy-free ... now I did suggest and I guess they are going to go back to the drawing board and check it out", he said. During his time in La Malbaie, the USA president refused to back down.

The tensions surrounding the tariffs underscore what appears to be a growing distance between the USA and its allies over Trump's isolationist policies, including his decisions to withdraw from the Paris climate accord in 2017 and the Iran nuclear deal in May. Taking a jab at Trudeau on Twitter, the president said that he has instructed his US officials not to endorse the communique.

But by insisting on re-negotiating every five years, Trump is diametrically opposed with Canada, which says the sunset clause would create perpetual uncertainty and harm long-term investment.

Trump's personal attack on Trudeau is unprecedented in the countries' longstanding relationship.

.

And he blamed Trudeau, the summit's host.

Trudeau refused, and the meeting was off.

The Canadian government announced at the G7 summit that it has raised more than $3.8 billion in an effort with other countries to send the world's poorest girls to school. "And that's a very profitable answer.".

Prime Minister Trudeau is being so indignant, bringing up the relationship that the USA and Canada had over the many years and all sorts of other things...but he doesn't bring up the fact that they charge us up to 300% on dairy - hurting our Farmers, killing our Agriculture!
