Canada condemns U.S. attack on Trudeau, country simmers

The White House is quietly trying to fix the American government's fractured relationship with Canada as President Donald Trump is in Singapore to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Politico reported Monday.

Trump went on to say that the U.S. gets "unfairly clobbered" on trade despite "protecting Europe at great financial loss".

"Way over the top with Navarro".

"The picture with Angela Merkel, who I get along with very well, where I'm sitting there like this" - Trump said, crossing his arms - "that picture, I'm waiting for the document because I wanted to see the final document". "We just shook hands!'" Trump said Tuesday.

"It would be with regret, but it would be with absolute certainty and firmness that we move forward with retaliatory tariffs measures on July 1 applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that the Americans have unjustly applied to us".

He continued by saying Trudeau's comments are "not what true friends do" and added "I think Peter Navarro's commentary on Fox was spot-on".

The tit-for-tat dispute over US metals tariffs followed more than a year of tense and so far unsuccessful negotiations to renew NAFTA and a long and failed charm offensive by Trudeau and top Canadian officials to avoid Trump's trade ire.

Right after leaving the meet and Canada, Trump tweeted, "Justin acts hurt when called out!".

He said Trump "did the courtesy to Justin Trudeau to travel up to Quebec for that summit".

He also insulted Trudeau personally, dubbing him "very dishonest and weak" and excoriated Canada's managed dairy market, which is a tiny part of total exchanges but is protected by a huge 270 percent tariff. "Not fair to the PEOPLE of America!" he tweeted.

The U.S. actually has a trade surplus with Canada. Larry Kudlow, Trump's chief economic adviser, told CNN that Trudeau's press conference addressing Trump's actions was "a betrayal".

Mr Trudeau and the European Union have vowed to take retaliatory action next month over USA tariffs on steel and aluminum.

"We finished the (G7) meeting and really everybody was happy".

Trudeau had said Canadians "are polite, we're reasonable, but also we will not be pushed around".

Meanwhile, the Canadian province of Quebec has offered $C100 million ($A101 million) in loans and guarantees for steel and aluminium companies hit by the United States tariffs.
