World Cup referee gets life ban over bribery

That's the inconvient situation it faces less than a month before the finals kick off in Russian Federation after Saudi Arabia banned 32-year-old Fahad Al Mirdasi from soccer for life for proposing to fix Saturday's King's Cup final. "He asked for an illegal sum of money in exchange for helping his team win the game", the federation's disciplinary and ethics committee said in a statement.

FIFA says it "notes the information that referee Fahad Al Mirdasi has allegedly been banned for life from all football-related activities" and is now requesting more information from the SAFF.

Clattenburg, who was appointed head of refereeing at the SAFF a year ago, stepped in to replace Al Mirdasi on the eve of the game.

SAFF has already banned Al Mirdasi for life after he asked for bribe to influence the outcome of a match.

'After the president of Ittihad club presented what was in his possession to the Federation of Football, the Saudi Federation sent this conversation to the Chairman of the General Directorate of Sport, who in turn informed the competent authorities in all details.

Al Mirdasi was also a referee at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

British former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg - who became Saudi Arabia's head of referees in February 2017 - replaced Al Mirdasi for Saturday's King's Cup final, which Al Ittihad won 3-1 after extra time. "Following the investigations, the Saudi Federation received the report of the competent authorities, which proved the charge against the referee under his personal confession of the request for bribery".

Reuters reported SAFF asked world governing body Federation Internationale de Football Association to impose a life global ban as well as removing him from the World Cup list.
