'Whitney' Trailer: Whitney Houston Documentary Aims To Hit All The Notes

Whitney debuted at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival in a midnight screening on Wednesday and the first official USA trailer just hit the web. Access has its advantages, however, and the film description teases never-before-seen archival footage, exclusive demo recordings, and rare performances from the iconic diva. According to its synopsis, the film promises to be "an intimate, unflinching portrait of Houston and her family that probes beyond familiar tabloid headlines and sheds new light on the spellbinding trajectory of Houston's life".

"When I was first approached about it, my immediate response was that I'm not really interested in Whitney Houston". But in her later years Houston struggled with drug and alcohol abuse that left her unable to perform properly.

Balancing the overall seriousness and somber tone of the trailer is a clip of Houston going in on another star of the times, Paula Abdul.

The doc features sit-downs with interviews with the man credited with discovering her and building her career, Clive Davis as well as former Epic Records CEO L.A. Reid who touches on the struggle of supporting Houston's extraordinary talent in the face of widely-reported drug use.

One in particular, appears to be Paula Abdul who Houston effortlessly shaded as being the inferior singer. "That girl is singing off key on the record", she says, reclining in a white bath robe.

A new trailer includes sit-down interviews with Houston's controversial ex-husband Bobby Brown, soul singer mother Cissy Houston, as well as many other friends and family. And I thought that was interesting. You can check it out the Miramax and Roadside Attractions in theaters (in North America) starting July 6. "And then Nicole sent me this article about Whitney's rendition of 'The Star-Spangled Banner" and how that changed how the song has been understood and sung ever since", he said.
