Villanova to host MI in November rematch of NCAA final

The Illinois men's basketball team will host Georgetown in the Gavitt Tipoff Games.

For the college basketball fans unaware, the Gavitt Games is a series between the Big Ten Conference and Big East Conference to start off a new college basketball season, which kind of worked out ideal for the NCAA.

It's hard to believe it was only last month in which the Villanova Wildcats claimed their second NCAA title in three seasons after a thrilling 79-62 win over the Michigan Wolverines.

Other matchups on the Gavitt Tipoff Games schedule include a national title game rematch between MI and Villanova on November 14 in Philadelphia along with Seton Hall playing at Nebraska and Marquette at in that day.

The Blue Demons ended their 2017-18 season in the opening game of the Big East Tournament, posting an 11-20 overall record and 4-14 mark in league play.

Villanova and MI, the schools that battled for the national championship in San Antonio, Texas, will meet again on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Villanova. The Wolverines last played in the Gavitt Games in 2015, losing to Xavier.

Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois will be the home of the Gavitt Tipoff Games. Penn State and DePaul will be meeting.

Scheduled through 2022, the Gavitt Tipoff Games will be played on consecutive days early in the college basketball season.

The series of games is in honor of the late Dave Gavitt, who founded of the Big East Conference and was a pioneer in the basketball world. Each edition consists of eight games with a couple of teams from both conferences sitting out. Each BIG EAST team will participate a minimum of six times, while Big Ten programs will take part a minimum of four times. Gavitt passed away in 2011 and was named to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
