Trump Tower transcripts released

The Senate intelligence committee says it agrees with a 2017 assessment by intelligence agencies that Russian Federation intervened in the presidential election earlier to hurt the candidacy of Democrat Hillary Clinton and to help Donald Trump.

The material, which includes interview transcripts and other "exhibits", is available here.

Trump Jr. later told the senators that he never mentioned to his father he was going to hold the meeting and did not think he talked with him about it immediately afterward.

The transcript is 224 pages long and includes questions from Senate investigators about conversations he had with the White House about the investigation.

Asked to account for the evolving statements, Trump Jr. told Senate investigators that "they're all very consistent with each other".

As more damaging details about the true objective of the meeting trickled out, Trump Jr. on July 9 issued a new statement admitting that he had actually sought damaging information on Clinton from these Russian actors.

The almost 2,000 pages of interviews do not appear to contain information that would change the course of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Trump's team and Russian Federation.

This marks the first time that Trump Jr.'s full account of what unfolded has been made public.

Schiff said Trump Jr. invoked the privilege because his lawyers claimed that the discussion with his father took place in the presence of legal counsel, which Schiff and other Democrats argued is a situation not covered by the privilege. That offer does not appear to have translated into an actual digital campaign.

Of Goldstone's promise of dirt, Balber said: "I think he has said publicly that he quote "goosed the story" for the goal of getting the folks in the Trump campaign to agree to the meeting".

The meeting - and whether President Trump knew about it - has become a central focus of Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, as well as the congressional Russia investigations. Trump Jr., son-in-law Jared Kushner and campaign chairman Paul Manafort all gathered with a Kremlin-connected lawyer and her entourage in Trump Tower in Manhattan after being promised damaging political "dirt" on Hillary Clinton. The documents contain a record of closed-door committee interviews with five of the eight meeting attendees, including Trump Jr., Goldstone, Russian-American lobbyist Rinat Akhmetshin, translator Anatoli Samochornov and Ike Kaveladze, a Russian with ties to oligarch Aras Agalarov.

Members of Congress and the Justice Department are investigating.

Newly released interview transcripts from the Senate Intelligence Committee show Donald Trump Jr. struggling, in real time, to keep his story straight. "He may have entered a minute or so after we all entered, but I believe he was. Americans can now review this unfiltered information and arrive at their own conclusions".

Asked if he thought it would be a problem to take a meeting described to him as part of a Russian government effort to aid his father, Trump Jr. said no. "Their efforts to hide the meeting and its true objective are consistent with a larger pattern of false statements about the Trump campaign's relationship with Russian Federation". "The committee's staff interviews reveal that top Trump campaign officials were frustrated and angry that the meeting did not produce enough damaging information on their opponent".
