South Korea to remove propaganda loudspeakers at border

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un (left) and South Korean President Moon Jae-in are crossing the militarized zone (DMZ) line in Panmunjom to North Korea.

On Friday, Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in vowed "complete denuclearisation" of the Korean peninsula, a goal that the United States also seeks as it tries to prevent North Korea developing a nuclear weapon that could reach the United States.

Both the countries have had different time zones since 2015 when North Korea changed its time to 30 minutes behind the South, created to mark the 70th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese rule after World War II.

Any deal with the United States will require that North Korea demonstrate "irreversible" steps to shutting down its nuclear weapons program, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Sunday.

Kim is "prepared to ... lay out a map that would help us achieve" denuclearization, Pompeo told ABC News This Week with George Stephanopoulos.

Moon made the comment on this morning in response to a suggestion that he receive the award by the widow of late South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000 after a summit with then North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.

In January, Moon had said Trump "deserves big credit" for bringing about the inter-Korean talks, saying it may have come from "U.S. -led sanctions and pressure". "What we need is only peace", Moon told other South Korean officials, according to Reuters.

The rating agency said despite the shared commitment by the two Koreas to advance the peace process, the path toward a definitive and permanent resolution of inter-Korean tensions is fraught with uncertainties and complexities involving other stakeholders, primarily the US and China. Some experts say Kim may announce scraping North Korea's long-range missile program, which has posed a direct threat to the United States. They are "very much on the president's mind" and freeing them would be a "demonstration of their (North Korea's) sincerity", he said.

The two leaders agreed that "unprecedented pressure" applied by the United States, South Korea and the global community had led to what they termed "this significant moment", according to a White House statement.

South Korea turned off the loudspeakers that broadcast a mixture of news, Korean pop songs and criticism of the North Korean regime as a goodwill gesture ahead of the summit.

Republican Senator James Lankford, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, criticized Trump for calling Kim "very honorable" on Twitter last week.

Kim expressed "his resolution to unify the two the first practical step for national reconciliation and unity", it said.

Kim "is a ruthless dictator that does public executions of anyone who. disagrees with him. He has literally starved his own people to help the elite", said Lankford.
