Several feared dead as boat carrying 40 people capsizes in Godavari river

A boat carrying around 40 people capsized today in Godavari river near Devipatnam village in Andhra Pradesh. All the occupants of the boat were members of the Kondareddi tribal community, The Indian Express reported. Officials at Rampachodavaram Police Station said that the tribals were returning in the same launch which they went in the morning.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister (Home) N China Rajappa on Tuesday spoke to East Godavari district officials over the phone and enquired about the incident. "It is about 100 metres away from the shore and at a depth of 50 feet". Due to sudden gales and whirl wind pools the boat lost balance and tilted one side and capsized. There were at least five children in the boat according to the survivors. "It seems that the driver said there was no reason to worry and continued with the journey".

Villagers from Manturu who reached the spot after hearing about the incident took up rescue operations with the help of country boats. He said officials had been asked to take up the rescue operations on a war footing. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams from Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams from Kakinada and Visakhapatnam had also been deployed.
