Rohingya crisis: Suu Kyi meets with United Nations envoys

Earlier on Monday, the council envoys met Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who asked them to press Myanmar to take back "their citizens". The UN has described the crisis as one of the worst humanitarian crises and alleged Myanmar of ethnic cleansing.

Mansour Ayyad Al-Otaibi, Kuwait's permanent representative at the United Nations and a member of the delegation, told the media at the airport in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka that the situation "cannot remain without solutions".

Rohingya refugees hold placards as the members of UN Security Council visit Kutupalong Refugee Camp in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, on April 29, 2018.

"Because the situation in Myanmar is very sensitive and complicated, they need to look comprehensively at the issues from different angles and perspectives", she said.

It said its forces were engaged in a legitimate security campaign in response to a string of Rohingya insurgents attacks on the security forces.

Numerous refugees arriving in Bangladesh recounted incidents of killings and rape but Myanmar largely rejected those reports as well as the accusation of ethnic cleansing. Thousands are believed to have been killed.

"The other thing the Security Council should do is refer the situation in Rakhine state to the International Criminal Court", Kenneth Roth, the executive director of Human Rights Watch, said Friday in a speech to journalists in Yangon, Myanmar's biggest city.

Ambassador Gustavo Meza-Cuadra of Peru, this month's president of the panel of 15, said the objective of the visit was compliance with a November 2016 council Presidential Statement.

"Burma is my homeland and we want to return there with conditions".

"We can not remain silent about it, and when we go back to NY...we will try to explore ways and means to speed up the implementation of the agreement signed between Bangladesh and Myanmar for [the] safe, free, and voluntary and dignified return of the refugees", he said.

"The problem there lies in their expulsion, treatment and the fact that they had to flee to Bangladesh", she said.

When the diplomats met with Min Aung Hlaing, they asked him about the security situation in Maungdaw and Buithdaung - two of the three townships where the crackdown took place - the repatriation process, projects on which Myanmar can work with United Nations agencies in Rakhine, and the military's willingness to act in accordance with the law in the state.

The Kuwaiti diplomat added that the refugees themselves wanted guarantees of safety and crucially citizenship on their return to a country which regards them as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. A lot of them live in poverty in Myanmar's Rakhine state, next to Bangladesh.

"The delegation will be visiting Taungpyo and Hla Phoe Khaung reception camps in Maungdaw region", said Myint Khine, a township administrator of Maungdaw.

"We may feel that that's too little too late, but we will want to talk to the Myanmar authorities about how they see accountability in this case".

"We are not Bengali, we are Rohingya".

Tayab, who was using crutches, said he was shot by Myanmar troops in his right leg.

The delegation also had comprehensive discussions with Myanmar delegation, led by U Kyaw Tint Swe, Minister at the Office of the State Counselor.

Suu Kyi, the de facto leader of mainly Buddhist Myanmar, has been pilloried overseas for her failure to speak up for the Muslim Rohingya or publicly condemn the army for driving them out of the country.
