Patrick Vieira 'upset' with Arsenal over 'token gesture'

The Spanish midfielder has been sidelined at Arsenal for 18 months with a serious ankle injury but the Independent says he "could be offered a new player-coaching deal" next season - if he wins his fitness battle.

Arsene Wenger took charge of his last game at Huddersfield on Sunday as the curtain came down on a 22-year spell at the helm.

Arteta would seek to bring in at least three of his own appointments - with further backroom changes expected.

Mikel Arteta is the main candidate to replace Arsenal Wenger as Arsenal head coach, The Guardian reported.

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has become increasingly convinced that the Spaniard, now Pep Guardiola's assistant coach at Manchester City, is the right man for the job.

Vieira is also a firm favourite with Gunners' fans, having helped drive Wenger's Invincibles team through their unbeaten league season of 2003/2004.

"I have seen the shortlist: Allegri, Carlo Ancelotti, Mikel Arteta - why not? I think all of them could manage Arsenal", he told BTSport.

'With Vieira - and this is only my opinion - yes.

Just not in England which seems to rule out a swift return to the Premier League. Now in charge of New York City, Vieira is said to be mystified over whether he has ever been under serious consideration.

Regardless, Pires believes his former teammate remains the ideal candidate to step into Wenger's shoes.
