Iceland's WOW air to commence India operations

WOW air, Iceland's only low-fare airline, will soon connect Canadians to the hustling and bustling of colourful Delhi at the lowest price on the market with a new route to India lifting off December 6, 2018.

Meanwhile those in the United States can fly from Newark, Boston, Baltimore, Chicago O'Hare, Pittsburgh, Detroit, San Francisco, Los Angeles and St. Louis.

"We are very excited to count New Delhi among our list of growing destinations outside of Europe", said Skúli Mogensen, CEO and founder of WOW air.

The airline says fares will start from as little as £149 one way including taxes, or from £499 one-way including taxes for premium. "We see India as a big opportunity", he said.

The Icelandic airline's move comes at a time when Indian budget carriers IndiGo, owned by InterGlobe Aviation, and SpiceJet have said they are drawing up plans to launch low cost long haul flights, including to Europe and the United States.

From Boston (BOS), New York (EWR), Washington D.C. (BWI), Chicago (ORD), Pittsburgh (PIT), Detroit (DTW), San Francisco (SFO), Los Angeles (LAX) and St. Louis (STL) to Dehli (DEL) via Iceland. Return flights also start at $199 one-way, meaning you can book a bare bones ticket for $398.

WOW air will use brand new Airbus A330neo aircrafts on the Delhi route, which are outfitted with the new WOW premium seats offering at least 37 inches of legroom.

Again these will include a stopover in Iceland before a 10-and-a-half hour flight to the Indian capital. Seats must be purchased for travel between January 10 and March 31.

The airline now serves 39 destinations across Europe and North America including London, Paris, New York, Toronto, Baltimore, San Francisco and Chicago.

Mr Mogensen said he was optimistic about the success of the airline in India. WOW air boasts one of the world's youngest fleet, with an average aircraft age of just 2 years. WOW air was also ranked as the 7th best low-priced airline in Europe at the 2013, 2014 and 2015 Skytrax World Airline Awards and was the youngest airline in the top ten.
