HTC planning a Blockchain-powered smartphone

There's no doubt that HTC's trying something different compared to most other Android OEMs with Exodus, but I'm not sure this is the product that'll revitalize the company's mobile business. Exodus will support not only cryptocurrencies but also decentralised applications. Chen said that he believes that a blockchain-powered smartphone might inspire a new wave of decentralized systems, in the same way that the availability of computers once paved the way for the makings of the internet. While the Taiwanese company has consolidated much of its mobile offerings in recent years, it announced today at the Consensus 2018 blockchain conference in NY that its upcoming Exodus handset is embracing everyone's favorite tech buzzword. The difference is it will be created to support blockchain-based distributed apps, a feature the company describes as "built-in secure hardware". The idea is to develop a blockchain network with Exodus phones as nodes to drive trading of digital currencies among the users of HTC phones.

Heading HTC's blockchain experiment is Phil Chen, the creator of the Vive VR headset.

Another big focus for Exodus is DApps, with HTC hoping that the device will increase the user base of Decentralized Apps by featuring a friendly and "streamlined user experience". While the Exodus phone maintains a crypto-connection, its important to understand the basics of blockchain outside of cryptocurrencies to see how revolutionary this device could be. Chen's new title is going to be "decentralized chief officer". That price and the release date, however, have yet to be revealed. So far, there is no word about when we might see the Exodus, but Sirin's Finney is now expected to launch in October.

You'll also be able to easily trade with peers on the phone's network - without any mining fees.

HTC plans to announce even more blockchain protocol partnerships in the coming months.
