HBO, Sky team on Amy Berg's "The Case Against Adnan Syed"

During the fall of 2014, it seemed almost impossible to go anywhere without falling into a conversation about the enthralling podcast "Serial", which debuted in October of that year to a seemingly immediate (and obsessed) audience.

The Case of Adnan Syed will attempt to trace "how the rush to justice and Syed's conviction in 2000 raised more questions than answers about what happened to Hae Min Lee, underscoring the instability of memory and conflicting eyewitnesses".

HBO have announced a new documentary series titled The Case Against Adnan Syed, which will cover the case popularised by the Serial podcast. Now Syed, Lee's ex-boyfriend who was convicted of her murder, will be the subject of a new four-hour docuseries from HBO and Oscar nominee Amy Berg.

In June 2016, a Baltimore Circuit Court Judge vacated Syed's conviction and granted him a new trial after new evidence challenged the reliability of cell phone data linking Syed to the crime scene, and a long-awaited alibi witness took the stand.

Produced by Working Title TV and Instinct Productions, the project will re-examine Lee's disappearance and murder, the original police investigation, and the present day while Syed, 36, awaits a new trial. In March of this year, Maryland's court of special appeals granted a retrial for Syed's case. According to a press release, producer Amy Berg has been given unprecedented access to those closest to the case - including Syed's family and friends, defence team, and members of the Baltimore City law enforcement.

HBO makes an interesting claim: that "the outcome" of Adnan's case will "possibly [be] shaped by the investigation pursued within the series itself".

Nick Cave will also be providing an original soundtrack for the series, which is yet to receive a release date.
