Florida man dies in e-cigarette explosion, police say

The 38 year old's vape pen was reportedly a device made in the Philippines that is unregulated and not recommended for beginners.

'Smok-E Mountain presents to you sharp, durable, and enigmatic products that blur the line between electronic cigarette and art.

The medical examiner says D'Elia's cause of death is "accidental". In this case, the autopsy noted that D'Elia was using a "mod" type e-cigarette manufactured by Smok-E Mountain. Since most e-cigarettes use lithium batteries, there is commonly known high risks associated with improper use of the electronics.

According to TMJ4, authorities began investigating the circumstances surrounding the Florida man's death after he was found dead in his home.

Gary Wilder told ABC he refuses to sell the devices, fearing they will overheat.

"Any other e-cig that has a computer chip in it prevents that from happening", Wilder added.

As with other exploding pieces of technology (namely smartphones and hoverboards), it would appear that the problem is linked to lithium-ion batteries.

This report cited no deaths as a result from vape pens, which is why D'Elia's is considered to be the first.

A recent report from FEMA and the U.S. Fire Administration found that e-cigarettes and vape pen explosions are not common - but when they do explode, the shape of the devices make them behave like "flaming rockets".

He worked for CNBC as a producer before moving to Florida and going freelance. He also suffered "thermal injuries", or burns, on roughly 80 percent of his body, the report said.

The damage to his home in St Petersburg was concentrated in his bedroom, where the burns were "extensive" - but there was minimal smoke.

Keep the vape pen out of direct sunlight.

Deputy fire marshal Steven Lawrence, who attended the incident told Fox6: "It's like having a small.firecracker in your hand".

An exploding battery can be an incredibly unsafe thing on its own, and when it's packed tightly into an all-metal vape it's easy to see how it could produce flying debris.
