Ex-CIA employee identified as suspect in 'Vault 7' leaks

Schulte worked in the CIA's Engineering Development Group, which produced the computer code, according to people with knowledge of his employment history as well as the group's role in developing cyberweapons. The Department of Justice notes that a first-time offender convicted of distribution of child pornography faces a statutory minimum sentence of 5-20 years, which can be scaled upward depending on the nature of the material.

Authorities also found images on Schulte's phone of an unnamed woman being sexually assaulted while "passed out on the floor" of his bathroom.

A government prosecutor disagreed with what he called the "characterization" by Schulte's attorney that "those search warrants haven't yielded anything that is consistent with [Schulte's] involvement in that disclosure".

A United States prosecutor said in January the investigation was still continuing and that Mr Schulte remained "a target of that investigation", the Washington Post reports, quoting court documents.

However, prosecutors suggested in the hearing that they were unable to present the evidence to the court because, while they had decrypted his hard-disk drives, they were unable to separate the child abuse images from the Vault 7 documents, and therefore required security clearance before the hearing could continue.

In September, Schulte was released under the condition that he did not leave New York City and that he stay away from using a computer.

On Tuesday, The Washington Post reported that officials also suspect he had provided Wikileaks with massive amounts of data in the "Vault 7 leak," which was published by the worldwide organization last March. Schulte says the server is accessible by at least 50 other people, and perhaps as many as 100. He said that the investigation was continuing, and that it involved in part how Tor, software that allows anonymous communication on the internet, "was used in transmitting classified information". That will give the DoJ plenty of time to develop evidence in the espionage case, which could get Schulte a life sentence if convicted.

A lawyer for a NY man being investigated in a massive Central Intelligence Agency leak of cyber hacking tools says her client is "deeply saddened" to hear he could face espionage charges.

Prosecutors said they plan to file a new indictment by July.

Mr Schulte's family lawyers have made repeated demands for prosecutors to either indict or clear their client of the Vault 7 allegations.

According to Schulte's LinkedIn page, he was an intern at the NSA while studying. After quitting the CIA in November 2016 - according to Roger he had complained about security vulnerabilities at the agency - he joined Bloomberg as a software engineer. The documents themselves covered a period from 2013 to 2016, when Schulte had been employed at the agency.

At a January 8 hearing, Schulte's attorneys argued that they did not contest his detention, based on their understanding that Schulte would be sent to Virginia, pursuant to a warrant.
