Bangladesh Supreme Court Upholds Former PM Khaleda Zia's Bail

Zia has challenged her conviction and the five-year jail term in the Orphanage Trust corruption case in the high court.

The High Court on Mar 12 granted an interim bail to Khaleda who was jailed on Feb 8 after a trial court convicted her.

After hearing arguments on Tuesday, the Appellate Division set Wednesday to deliver its order on the two petitions filed challenging Khaleda's bail granted by the High Court.

Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, serving a five-year jail term in a corruption case, was on Wednesday granted bail by the country's Supreme Court, which upheld a high court order in her favour.

Earlier on Tuesday morning, the Attorney General appealed to the court for holding more arguments in the case.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by chief justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, handed down the order.

They (Huda, Nasim, Helal and Tuku) had suffered in jail for more than one year and they were seriously ill and submitted medical certificates to the court, he said, adding that the allegations mentioned in the cases filed against them were different from the allegation brought against Khaleda in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. "It would be easy to secure bail from the lower courts since the Appellate Division upheld the High Court's bail".

The ACC had filed the case with Ramna Police Station in July 2008, accusing the six of misappropriating over Tk 2.1 crore that came from a foreign bank as grants for orphans.

Zia has been in the old jailhouse on Nazimuddin Road, Dhaka after she was convicted in the case.

A special court had in February this year sentenced Khaleda Zia, her elder son Tarique Rahman and four others for embezzlement of funds meant for Zia Orphanage Trust.

Hearings on the appeal petitions filed by the state and the ACC were held on May 8 and 9. "And the days when the bail was stayed in the Appellate Division will be deducted from the four-month period".
