Zuckerberg addresses rumours about Facebook tapping your microphone

Wednesday, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg returned to Capitol Hill to testify before Congress about the impact the platform had on the 2016 election cycle and how the company uses the vast amount of user data it collects. "We don't sell data. I believe people own their content", he told the House panel.

Facebook has already been accused of favoring liberal content, so we know this isn't an unrealistic notion. On one hand, many complain that Facebook's power is unchecked, but on the other hand, some encourage Facebook to use its influence to combat hate speech with intricate algorithms that can target certain language. Yes, we said billion.

The controversy has brought a flood of bad publicity and sent the company's stock value plunging, but Zuckerberg seemed to achieve a measure of success in countering that. It moved even higher when he started addressing the questions from lawmakers and finished the day with a 4.5 percent gain.

MARK Zuckerberg has endured 10 hours of questioning from U.S. senators over the past two days. It's clear that Russian Federation used Facebook to influence voter opinion in the election, but this is the first the public has heard of the Special Counsel talking directly to employees about it.

"We're going to have to revise laws here to make the privacy protection more proactive to address issues of say consent, which is much stronger under the new European laws".

With 44 Senators asking questions, and just five minutes of time allotted for each, there was limited potential for follow-up questions to and grilling of the CEO during the testimony at Congress. Their mission is to make money out of connecting people.

Sure, Facebook would still need someone to manually go over the flagged posts in case there are any false positives. It's not enough to give people a voice.

Facebook was getting to the bottom of exactly what Cambridge Analytica did and telling everyone affected. "While Cambridge Analytica and Facebook are on top of everyone's mind we aim to cast our net wider and think longterm".

He said the company made big changes in the platform in 2014 that have prevented this specific situation with Cambridge Analytica from occurring again. We may use your response in a follow up story. "I'm aware that there may be, but we are working with them".

The deeper answer goes back nearly 10 years, to when I asked two PhD candidates to choose a topic.

In fact, one senator, even asked Zuckerberg whether Europe "has it right" when it comes to managing companies like Facebook, to which Zuck hesitantly replied that Europe "gets some things right", prompting laughter from the room. Zuckerberg told Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) that such an audit could take "many months", and that he expected to find "a handful" of breaches from other firms. Researchers also talked about how users perceive privacy, and the social network's usability.

On Friday, Facebook sought to allay concerns over political manipulation of its platform by announcing support for the "Honest Ads Act" that requires election ad buyers to be identified, and to go further by verifying who sponsors ads on key public policy issues.

The University's School of Information has been studying the implications of Facebook and the information infrastructure for almost a decade, said information studies professor Andrew Dillon.
