USA and Allies Launch Missile Strikes Against Syria

"Could not have had a better result".

Donald Trump takes to Twitter after Syria airstrikes: 'Mission Accomplished!'

Russian Federation on Saturday called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council as Moscow said it would consider supplying S-300 missile systems to Syria following US -led strikes. The U.N. Security Council was meeting at Moscow's request.

"Russia probably got an assurance that these strikes would only target the CW capability of the regime", he said.

Russia's foreign ministry said that these strikes, which were a response to last weekend's chemical attack by the Syrian regime, came when the country had "a chance of a peaceful future".

- The Russian embassy in the USA said it had warned that such actions would "not be left without consequences", adding that insulting President Vladimir Putin was "unacceptable and inadmissible".

Syrian state TV carried live images of hourslong street celebrations with people dancing and chanting in support of their government's "steadfastness" following unprecedented joint airstrikes by the United States, France and Britain on Syria.

The Syrian regime, however, fired about 40 surface-to-air missiles at incoming missiles or aircraft, but most seemed to lack effective guidance systems and were not effective, the Pentagon said. "We affirm our stand with the unity of Syrian territory and reject efforts aimed at disobeying or harm the unity and sovereignty", Fatah said in a statement.

A United States official told Reuters the strikes were aimed at multiple targets and involved Tomahawk cruise missiles. He added that Syria's air defenses were ineffective and that numerous more than 40 surface-to-air missiles fired by the Syrians were launched after the allied attack was over.

A fact-finding team from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is in Syria to investigate.

The allied operation comes a year after a US missile strike that Trump said was meant to deter Assad from further use of chemical weapons.

But the war dragged on for many years after that and the banner became a symbol of USA misjudgments and mistakes in the long and costly conflict.

He pointed out that the scenario with chemical weapons can not be considered separately from the links Jaysh al-Islam has with Saudi Arabia and the Central Intelligence Agency.

Assad, who has denied ever using chemical weapons against his opponents, responded to the strikes with a defiant vow.

The Pentagon said Saturday that a joint US-British-French operation against Syria's regime had "successfully hit every target", countering assertions from Russian Federation that dozens of missiles were intercepted.

General Joseph Dunford at a Pentagon briefing shortly after Trump's announcement said three targets had been struck.

May is in conflict with Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose government she says is responsible for the nerve-agent attack on a former spy in Salisbury, England, last month.

The U.S., United Kingdom and France are all North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members.

The Prime Minister said she will go before the Commons on Monday to answer questions about her decision but insisted there was no "alternative path".

Angela Merkel said the US, Britain and France "took responsibility in this way as permanent members of the UN Security Council".

In the days between the attack in Douma and the US-led response, Washington and Moscow clashed repeatedly in duelling statements and debates.

The ministry said that the missiles were downed by the Arab Republic's air defenses as they approached their targets.

"This is hard to do in a situation like this", he said, in light of the volatility of chemical agents.

Assad's key ally Iran also slammed the attack, with supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei describing Western leaders as "criminals".

Dunford said the US did not coordinate targets with or notify the Russian government of the strikes, beyond normal airspace "de-confliction" communications. Still, French defence minister Florence Parly told reporters early Saturday the country was not seeking a military escalation and had, with its allies, "made sure that the Russians were warned ahead".

British leader May said in London that the West had tried "every possible" diplomatic means to stop Assad from using chemical weapons. She said the use of force was "right and legal" in this case. But it did nothing to target the Syrian Government's chemical weapons stockpile. He authorized a barrage of Tomahawk cruise missiles to hit a single Syrian airfield in April 2017 in retaliation for Assad's use of sarin gas against civilians.

Trump and Pentagon officials said the basis for the strike was the US interest in deterring Assad's use of chemical weapons - an interest the USA expressed last April when it smashed up a regime airfield with cruise missiles after an earlier attack using the nerve agent sarin.
