The Rock's 'Rampage' Wins Weekend Box-Office Battle

The battle was close between loud, clumsy aliens and huge, loud monsters at the box office, but those big boys took home the crown with the Bally-Midway video game adaptation Rampage topping A Quiet Place this weekend. But again, with a massive budget like that, Rampage needs a good showing overseas to make a profit, and it's doing just that, eyeing a $50 million opening in China in addition to performing well in other overseas markets. The film, which earned $10.5 million on Friday, should net $31-35 million for the weekend.

Reviewers generally didn't enjoy Rampage, but the film boasts a very strong A-minus CinemaScore, which tracks what audiences are saying.

While "A Quiet Place" won't repeat as No. 1, Paramount still has a lot to celebrate with director-star John Krasinski's hit film.

Rampage may have failed to set the U.S. box office alight over the weekend, but it seems audiences in the UAE can't get enough of Dwayne Johnson and his monkey business in the big budget monster flick. Audiences gave it a B-minus CinemaScore.

It was a different story here in the UAE, however, where the movie grossed Dh7,522,947 at the local box office, making it the biggest 2018 opening weekend thus far, surpassing even Marvel's smash hit Black Panther. That figure brings the movie's domestic total to about $100 million after 10 days in theaters.

In third is Universal/Blumhouse's "Truth Or Dare", which made $19 million in its opening weekend from 3,029 locations.

Rounding out the top five are Steven Spielberg and Warner Bros'. sci-fi adventure Ready Player One, with about $11.2 million in its third weekend, and Universal's R-rated comedy Blockers, with about $10.3 million in its second weekend. Pacing for $18-21 million in receipts, the film should keep its #3 position for the weekend.

Both films will have a chance to add to their totals next week (with the only new competition coming in the form of I Feel Pretty, Super Troopers 2, and Traffik) before the real 2,000 pound gorilla of the summer season, Avengers: Infinity War, opens nationwide on April 26.
