Syria's Assad tells Russian lawmakers Western strikes were act of aggression

In his televised address from the White House on Friday evening, Trump said the USA was prepared to sustain economic, diplomatic and military pressure on Assad until the Syrian leader ends what Trump called a criminal pattern of killing his own people with internationally banned chemical weapons.

When asked whether Russian Federation was prepared to work with the proposals of Western countries at the United Nations, Ryabkov told TASS news agency: "Now the political situation is extremely tense, the atmosphere is extremely electrified, so I will not make any predictions".

In a separate interview, Haley told CBS News that new sanctions against Russian Federation, which has forces in Syria supporting the Assad regime, would be announced Monday that would "go directly to any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to Assad and chemical weapons use".

The president wrote "Mission Accomplished!" in regards to the strikes coordinated by the USA, the United Kingdom and France against Syrian targets.

In the coastal city of Latakia, a northern province, hundreds of civilians congregated in Sheikh Dahir Square to express that the aggression against Syria failed because of the steadiness of the Syrian army.

The U.S. has vowed to also squeeze Syria's allies Russian Federation and Iran.

Speaking on Fox News Sunday, Haley listed three aims for the United States: ensuring that chemical weapons are not used in any way that poses a risk to US interests, that Daesh is defeated and that there is a good vantage point to watch what Iran is doing. We set their chemical weapons program back years. Our job was never to take Assad out.

In late March, Trump made a surprise announcement, saying the USA would withdraw from Syria in the near future.

He said there were an estimated 50 warehouses storing chemical weapons before the program was dismantled in 2013.

"I say to the foreign secretary, I say to the prime minister, where is the legal basis for this?"

Russian agencies quoted the lawmakers as saying that Assad was in a "good mood", had praised the Soviet-era air defence systems Syria used to repel the Western attacks and had accepted an invitation to visit Russia at an unspecified time. A UN Security Council vote brought by Syria's ally, Russia, and condemning the US-led strikes was rejected.

"This is not going to solve the Syrian conflict".

"Assad knew that Russian Federation had its back, Assad knew that Russian Federation would cover for them at the United Nations, and Assad got reckless, and he used it in a way that was far more aggressive", she said. Syria has always denied any chemical use and accused rebels of fabricating the attack.

"This is something we are not going to tolerate", Haley also said Sunday.

"We need more serious steps, more pressure to go to the negotiating table to find a political solution", even if that includes military intervention, she said. The operation targeted three Syrian chemical weapons facilities - one in the capital of Damascus and two others near Homs, near the border with northern Lebanon.
