Seven inmates killed in SC prison violence

Prisons spokesman Jeff Taillon said State Law Enforcement Division agents were required to help secure Lee Correctional Institution at 3am local time on Monday (8am in the UK).

Seven prison inmates have died following hours of fighting inside a maximum security prison in SC.

Lee County Fire & Rescue says multiple agencies were called into assist with the "mass-casualty incident" at the prison.

Some local media outlets reported the local coroner had been called to the scene.

Lee Correctional Institution is a Level 3 facility - meaning it's high security and holds violent offenders who are serving long sentences, as well as those with behavioral problems, the Department of Corrections says. The facility has seen multiple insurrections previously, including less than a month ago when three inmates took an officer hostage briefly and assumed control of part of a dorm, per the newspaper.

Two officers were stabbed in a 2015 fight by two inmates that left one of them dead.
