Rapper Kendrick Lamar wins Pulitzer music prize for 'DAMN.'

The same week it celebrates its first birthday, Kendrick Lamar's DAMN. has just won a Pulitzer Prize.

The board announced the news today (April 16) that the Top Dawg Entertainment LP achieved the honor in "Music Composition".

The New York Times also shared a second prize with The Washington Post for coverage on Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election.

Lamar has been praised and lauded for his deep lyrical content, remarkable live performances, and his profound mix of hip-hop, spoken word, jazz, soul, funk, poetry and African sounds. The ties fuelled special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into alleged Russian attempts to influence the presidential election.

The most famous names of American journalism were honoured on Monday with Pulitzer prizes for investigating Donald Trump and exposing endemic sexual harassment in Hollywood. The winners were the reporters of the Press Democrat, a newspaper in Santa Rosa, California, for their coverage of the state's deadly wildfires.

The stories' impact soon spread beyond Weinstein to allegations against other prominent men.

In the arts, prizes are awarded in seven categories, including fiction, drama and music.

The 2017 Pulitzer Prize for music went to "Angel's Bone", an opera by composer Du Yun.

Lamar was awarded the Pulitzer over co-finalists Michael Gilbertson and his string Quartet and Ted Hearne's cantata Sound from the Bench.

Previous Pulitzer music winners include jazz musicians Wynton Marsalis and Ornette Coleman.
