Patrick Reed taking 3-shot lead into final round at Masters

Reed was trending on Twitter, with numerous comments of a disparaging nature.

No one this side of Greg Norman knows how treacherous a lead can be on Sunday at the Masters better than Rory McIlroy.

While the Ryder Cup has elevated Reed's persona as a professional, he built a reputation as a match-play titan in college three miles away from Augusta National.

Woods said after his round, however, that he felt fine, that his training leading up to the Masters got him where he wanted to be. He totally fell apart after that, playing the last nine holes at 7 over to finish with an 80.

Instead, the novelty of being without a constantly-updating phone heightened the experience.Sure, there were roars attached to birdies and eagles that I never saw, but that was made up for by the excitement of scoreboard watching.

Not to be outdone, the player who is often described as America's bulldog chipped in for eagle at the 15th hole from 27 yards to extend his advantage to five strokes.

"Yeah, I heard it".

"I kept myself out of trouble and allowed my putter to do the work", Reed said.

It won't exactly be a singles match on Sunday, but it'll be close.

Patrick Reed of the United States plays his shot from the seventh tee during the third round of the 2018 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 7, 2018 in Augusta, Georgia.

For those who reveled in the festivities on Day 3, it will be Reed's eagles at Nos. He eagled the second hole and poured in five more birdies in posting his first career bogey-free round at Augusta.

Two ahead overnight to lead outright for the first time in a major, world number 24 Reed made two eagles in a 67. "Around that corner, when you get to 14, 15, 16, the atmosphere is always very good there and the noise is up, and it was nice to be getting something going around there".

As well as Reed has performed in the Ryder and Presidents Cups for the US side, his record on the Grand Slam stage has not reached the same heights.

Justin Rose is England's best hope of winning the Masters - he is two-under-par. Nor has he been particularly prolific since that epic duel at Hazeltine National, going winless on Tour the past year and a half. All of the normal brushing up on tournament history was done, but I also was able to find out a bit about what to expect as a member of the working press. Those men are: Patrick Reed (14 under), Rory McIlroy (11 under) and Rickie Fowler (9 under).

Mickelson won in Mexico last month, his first win since 2013. His approach shot came up short and he failed to clear a hill with his third on his way to a bogey. "I feel like all the pressure is on him".

"You don't need to put four ideal rounds together to win out here, especially at majors", Reed said. Get the snacks ready.Three rounds have been played and the contenders are set.

"This is my first final group here since 2011", said McIlroy.

Though at the end of the second day, Patrick Reed sits atop the leaderboard.

There will also be a few other interested players who may have a say in the final outcome.

"It's definitely not a two-horse race at this point", McIlroy said. "There's a lot more guys".

No, this won't be the same as Hazeltine.

Buckle up. If Saturday's action was any indication, the final round on Sunday will be must-see TV.

Reed tried to turn it on the man who he'll playing with in the final pairing, pointing out that McIlroy has a rare chance within his grasp too. The two were to be paired together, along with Jordan Spieth, for Rounds 1 and 2 when McIlroy was asked about the threesome. But then the rain started coming down, harder than it had all day, harder than it probably looked on television, and harder than McIlroy would have liked.
