NYC Is Removing Statue of a Doctor Who Experimented on Enslaved Women

The statue of Dr. James Marion Sims, a 19th-century doctor who experimented on slaves, was moved Tuesday morning from Central Park to the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, where the controversial physician is buried.

Sims was celebrated for his work that lead to a cure for fistula, a condition caused by continued obstructed childbirth.

Marion Sims is called a pioneer in the field of gynecology: he came up with extenders and mirrors, which doctors use to this day.

Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio called for a review of "symbols of hate" on city property eight months ago following a white supremacist protest in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August that left a person dead.

Sims was known for pioneering advancements in gynecology through unethical means.

In the past year or so, during a period of dialogue about what it means to continue to maintain monuments to figures whose lives no longer seem praiseworthy, Confederate monuments have been removed from many cities, and universities have begun to come to grips with their own and their benefactors' connections to slavery. "Sims is not our hero", shouted the others. This is why the special Commission established by NY mayor bill de Blasio to identify "symbols of hate", decided that the monument to such a controversial personality has no place in the city centre.

The names of many black women on whom Sims operated are unknown.

A monument to indigenous people will also be erected near the Columbus statue at the gateway to Central Park. Protesters have pushed the American Museum of Natural History to remove the a statue of Theodore Roosevelt, and a statue of Christopher Columbus became an issue in the recent mayoral election, though de Blasio ultimately decided the statue should remain with added information about Columbus's treatment of Native Americans.
