Michael Cohen, Once the President's Trusted Fixer, Emerges as His Greatest Liability

Trump's tweet on the matter comes nearly a week after Cohen was raided, with the president having previously made it clear he was deeply unhappy about the raid.

The judge also heard a request from Michael Avenatti, Daniels' lawyer, to weigh in on the files because they likely involved her, and the judge consented.

These could include claims by Stormy Daniels, the adult film star who claimed to have had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006.

President Donald Trump has suggested that his lawyers are concerned they will be raided following the FBI's search of his personal lawyer Michael Cohen's home, hotel room and office last Monday.

Cohen did not instantly respond to a petition comment.

Todd Harrison, an attorney for Cohen, urged the judge to issue a temporary restraining order to let either Cohen's lawyers or a court-appointed special master review the materials seized by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents.

The 90-minute hearing before Manhattan U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood focused on a request from Michael Cohen, Trump's lawyer, to have either his own team or a court-appointed special master take over from prosecutors the review of what materials seized from his office this week were protected by lawyer-client privilege.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Tom McKay accused Cohen of trying to invoke "wildly overbroad" claims of attorney-client privilege to avoid the disclosure of thousands of allegedly privileged communications related to the president and other cases.

Once they've reviewed the records, the filter team can give to the investigators communications "between Cohen and persons with whom Cohen undisputedly does not have an attorney-client relationship", likely meaning the records wouldn't be between Cohen and Trump, prosecutors said.

In them, they found that Cohen had done "little to no legal work, and that zero emails were exchanged with President Trump".

If Cohen is claiming to have made the transaction on behalf of his friend and long-time client Trump, the situation could be seen by Mueller and those investigating the Trump campaign as a "coordinated, illegal, in kind contribution by Cohen for the objective of influencing the election", Potter said.

Cohen's attorney Brent Blakely said on Thursday, "No decision has been made for Mr. Cohen to assert his Fifth Amendment rights".

On Monday, Cohen's attorney called the searches "completely inappropriate and unnecessary". She says it was hush money for her alleged affair with President Trump.
