Mark Hughes slams Marcus Alonso for attempting to break Shane Long's leg

Incident: Shane Long is challenged by Marcos Alonso, who studs him in the back of the leg.

Marcos Alonso could escape a retrospective ban for his nasty tackle on Shane Long during Chelsea's 3-2 win against Southampton on Saturday.

Perhaps it was because the ball had been played away - and was followed by referee Mike Dean - that the incident was missed and went totally unpunished.

The Southampton forward was forced off the field for treatment but was able to continue.

The official claims not to have seen the challenge and Saints boss Mark Hughes slammed Dean following the game.

"If you see it again he (Dean) can clearly see it".

The FA could then charge Alonso with violent conduct, which would result in a three-game ban.

Thankfully Lengthy wasn't severely injured however as there was no chance or obvious intention to play the ball it was a transparent crimson card offence.

These two however, appeared far more deliberate and intending to cause the opponent injury which is why the offender should be punished and the fact that can't be treated the same on review shows the importance of the referee on the day detecting and punishing them correctly.

If he sees hit, he's going to give it.

Ex-Chelsea captain Dennis Wise called Mike Dean's decision "a joke".

Speaking to Sky Sports after the defeat, Hughes said, "In the last two games against Arsenal and Chelsea, I've seen encouraging things but also things that will damage us in the coming games if we don't learn from them".
