E. coli outbreak in 11 states linked to romaine lettuce

Romaine lettuce is the one behind a recent e-coli outbreak impacting consumers across the country but that lettuce was grown in Yuma so we are the most likely to have it in our grocery stores. That's all the information the USA agency gives in that regard as it adds, "no common grower, supplier, distributor, or brand has been identified".

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that chopped romaine lettuce from Yuma, Arizona could be tainted with E. coli O157:H7, which could make people sick. The reported illnesses occurred between March 22 and March 31, and 93% of the 28 people interviewed reported eating romaine lettuce (mainly from a restaurant) during the week that they became ill. In the warning, CDC officials said people who have purchased chopped romaine lettuce from stores "should not eat it and should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick". "This takes an average of two to three weeks". Cases of illness showing E. coli symptoms have been reported in Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington. If you do not know if the lettuce is romaine, do not eat it and throw it away. "Anyone experiencing symptoms of this illness should see a healthcare provider". Numerous cases so far were contracted from salad mixes used in restaurants, but some cases have been linked to bagged romaine purchased in stores. Although none of the confirmed E. coli cases have yet been linked to Fresh Foods, the company is concerned that its romaine supplier may have been involved in the outbreak. FDA emphasized that this outbreak is not related to a multistate outbreak that occurred last November to December involving leafy greens, as those infections had a different DNA fingerprint of the E. coli O157:H7 bacteria. Some of its types are pathogenic that can cause illness through exposure to contaminated food or water, or contact with animals or other people. Those infected may suffer from bloody diarrhea, severe stomach cramps and vomiting. The damaged red blood cells clog the filtering system of the kidney, which can lead to life-threatening kidney failure.
