Armenian Ex-President Nominated For PM As Protesters Allege 'Power Grab'

Around a thousand protesters staged rallies on Monday in the Armenian capital against former president Serzh Sarkisian as he moves to maintain a chokehold on power as prime minister.

As reported by Oxu.Az, the vice speaker of the Armenian parliament, a member of the executive body of the Republican Party of Armenia Eduard Sharmazanov, stated this on Monday.

On the eve of April 15, speaking at the France Square, where non-stop protests against the Serzh Sargsyan nomination had been passing for four days, Pashinyan called for civil disobedience.

"We can not let this happen".

Police have set up a barricade on the Marshal Baghramyan Street in order to prevent protesters from making their way to the parliament building.

Serzh Sarkisian had promised in 2014 that he would "not aspire" to the post of prime minister if Armenia switched from a presidential to a parliamentary system as a result of the referendum.

Serzh Sargsyan was replaced by Armen Sarkissian, who was inaugurated as the fourth president of Armenia on April 9.

Opposition politicians say the shift to a parliamentary republic with a powerful prime minister has been created to increase Serzh Sarkisian's grip on power in the impoverished Moscow-allied country.

"If my candidacy is approved.I am going to spend a great deal of time sharing experiences that I have accumulated in different positions over the years", Sarkisian said in an interview with the Russian media outlet Izvestia published on April 16.
