Apple will fix Series 2 watch batteries for free

Apple is now offering free repairs of 42mm Apple Watch Series 2 models with swollen batteries, reports MacRumors.

But there's a (big) caveat: the gratis maintenance service is in place strictly for devices suffering from battery issues, according to a leaked internal document.

Owners of affected eligible devices can gain access to free servicing by visiting the Contact Apple Support page and clicking through the options for "Apple Watch" "Battery, Power, and Charging" "Bring in for Repair" in order to book an appointment for an assessment.

The smartwatch doesn't have to be under warranty and "Apple will authorise coverage for eligible devices for three years after the original date of purchase", MacRumors reported.

Apple hasn't formally announced the new policy and you might not want to depend on free repairs right away when some staffers might not be aware of the change. The fix umbrella will cover up to three years after purchase in other words, you likely have until 2019 or 2020. The program does not, however, apply to any Series 1 or Series 3 models, nor does it apply to any 38mm models. Apple notes, however, that all models will be subject to a "visual-mechanic" inspection prior to service.

The first-generation Apple Watch (Series o) seemingly suffered from the same problem, with Apple implementing a similar 3-year fix program for affected users.
