Video Released in Salt Lake City Federal Courthouse Shooting

"Having carefully reviewed the video of Mr. Angilau's swift flight from counsel table", Dowdell wrote in his ruling, "his vault over the witness stand with pen in hand, and his attempt to violently attack the shackled witness, the Court has little difficulty determining that Doe's use of force to immediately stop Angilau's attack was objectively reasonable under the totality of the circumstances".

A federal judge has released the four-year-old courtroom video of the intense moment a defendant is fatally shot as he attacks a witness in Salt Lake City.

Angilau, who is believed to be a member of the Tongan Crip gang, ran towards the rival gangster testifying and attempted to attack him. He is behind the witness stand.

According to The Salt Lake Tribune, Angilau, who was a member of the Salt Lake City Tongan Crip Gang, was on trial for racketeering, and the witness, Vaiola Tenifa, was a former gang member.

The Utah Headliners and the media outlets named in the Freedom of Information Act request filed a motion in court in December 2016, arguing that if video of the shooting is admitted as evidence in the wrongful death lawsuit, it should be released to the public.

"Drop the pen out of your hand", an officer yells at Angilau after he has been shot.

Court footage shows the witness sinking out of the way before a US Marshal shot Angilau, 25, four times.

Authorities have identified the US marshal only as Jane Doe.

Dowdell granted the summary judgment Friday and dismissed the plaintiff's excessive force lawsuit. Robert Sykes, the Angilau family's attorney, said he was disappointed with the ruling and that it would be up to his client's to decide if they want to appeal. "There was no necessity to use force", he told KSL.

Angilau's family wanted a jury to see the video to see if the marshal used appropriate force after the Federal Bureau of Investigation found the shooting was justified. Faces of the marshal and jurors are blurred to obscure their identities.
