Twitter suspends multiple high profile accounts for stealing tweets

Twitter's struggle to clean up its platform is highly appreciated. On Friday, the social media website suspended a slew of accounts known for stealing and retweeting viral tweets without crediting their original creators. It is a practice that has been going on for a while and Twitter has had a tough time cracking down on it. Twitter deleted these accounts because they were reported to be stealing other users' tweets without crediting them. Tweetdecking is the practice seen with groups on Tweetdeck who mass-retweet each others posts in order to get them viral. According to a recent BuzzFeed report, they used their reach to make money by selling retweets, enabling them to artificially make posts go viral. Twitter has suspended quite a lot of accounts that were participating in this behavior.

At the moment, it is still unclear if Twitter intends to make these suspensions permanent.

While there was some lament from users now forced to rebuild their following from scratch, it seems as if the majority of the Twitterverse couldn't be happier about the purge. Earlier this year, the company released the shocking statistics on its investigations over Russian propaganda campaign via the platform.

Under increasing pressure to eliminate spamming, Twitter announced last month that it has a new set of rules on how users and app can automate tweets.

This process goes against the new rules Twitter put in place at the end of February that were meant to maintain the organic nature of how tweets gain popularity. Now the accounts-which racked up millions of followers and stole amusing tweets without giving credit-are actually gone from Twitter. The company is also now making greater effort to crack down on the use of bots on its site.
