Trump sacks Secretary of State Tillerson after visiting Nigeria

Nigeria's presidency said on Monday it plans to negotiate for the release of 110 girls abducted from a school in the northeastern town of Dapchi last month, rather than use a military operation to free them by force.

"President Buhari added that Nigeria was working in concert with worldwide organizations and negotiators, to ensure that the girls were released unharmed by their captors", the presidency statement said.

Though Shekau, the popular leader of the group claims the kidnap of the Chibok girls, no one is certain about the faction behind the latest kidnap of the Dapchi schoolgirls on February 19, 2018.

President Muhammadu Buhari has explained why the Federal Government chose negotiation rather than the military option to secure the release of the abducted Dapchi schoolgirls and the remaining Chibok girls in the custody of Boko Haram terrorists.

A move, United States Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, who came to Nigeria on a one day visit, backed fully. The girls were reportedly kidnapped by members of Boko Haram, a Jihadist militant organization who previously kidnapped nearly 300 girls in 2014.

"We are trying to be careful".

On specific ways the American government would assist Nigeria combat terrorism, Tillerson said, "First, we respect the responsibilities of the government of Nigeria and the territorial integrity of Nigeria".

Nigeria and the United States of America are set to establish a Commercial and Investment Dialogue as well as a Trade and Investment Framework Council between the two countries as a way of deepening trade and investment opportunities. I think that is the best way we have been helping the government of Nigeria secure the release of the girls, which we hope, will be done in a peaceful manner.

Buhari and the US Secretary of State also discussed counter-terrorism efforts and humanitarian issues in Nigeria's North-East and in the Lake Chad Basin.

Mr Tillerson described Nigeria as a very important country to the U.S, stressing: "You have our support in your challenges".
