Tiger Woods to captain 2019 Presidents Cup team

Woods will be joined by Ernie Els, who will captain the worldwide team during the matches at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia.

Tiger Woods will reportedly serve as the US team's captain for the Presidents Cup in Melbourne, Australia in 2019 and it is expected that he'll be introduced on Tuesday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, according to Alex Miceli of Morning Read. They spoke on condition of anonymity because it has not been announced.

An official announcement is expected on Tuesday.

Els and Woods featured prominently in the event's only draw when they faced each other in a sudden-death playoff in 2003 in South Africa to decide the trophy only to have it declared a tie when fading light forced an end to play after three extra holes.

Woods has been heavily involved in team event while not playing in recent years because of back injuries.

Whilst Els might be a logical choice to be the next worldwide team captain, Woods' anticipated appointment comes as more of a surprise, not least because he will be only 43 by the time the match takes place in Melbourne next year. Els said it was the first time he felt his legs shake over a putt. The US has won ten, with the global team winning just once.

Four-time major victor Els has finished runner-up to Woods seven times, including twice in the majors.

In 1998 in Thailand, Woods rallied from an eight-shot deficit in the final round and beating Els in a playoff. Woods had two birdies and one bogey on the day.

Woods will follow Fred Couples, Jay Haas and Steve Stricker as captain of the U.S. Presidents Cup team.

The 2019 Presidents Cup will be the 13th match in the competition's history. When asked last month about being named as an assistant to Furyk in this year's Ryder Cup, Woods hinted at being a player-captain.

Woods was runner-up at the Valspar Championship on Sunday and plays at Bay Hill this week, where he is an eight-time victor.
