Shoe memorial represents thousands of victims of United States gun violence

KGO-TV reports, the display is part of a massive memorial by a community organization called Avaaz.

A pair of turquoise blue cowboy boots stood next to a photo of Allison Parker, a 24-year-old reporter who was fatally shot on live television in 2015. Some participants who attended to help display the shoes lost their own children to gun violence. "I'll be traveling to DC literally wearing my son Daniel's shoes, the ones he wore the day he died at Columbine", he said.

Avaaz says shoes have also been donated by celebrities, including Bette Midler, Susan Sarandon, Alyssa Milano, Chelsea Handler, Vanessa Bayer, Brett Davern, Hayley Mills, Colm Meaney, Brenda Meaney, and Harry Clarke.

Students across the country plan to walk out of their classrooms for 17 minutes to commemorate the 17 students and staff members who were killed in the February 14 massacre.

From 8:30 am to 2 pm, the shoes were displayed on the southeast lawn in the hope of sending a clear message to Congress: Reform gun control legislation or more children will be killed by gun violence.

The group bases their estimate of 7,000 child deaths on a study by the American Academy of Pediatrics, that broke down CDC numbers.

It comes nearly a month after 17 people were killed in the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

The massacre was the deadliest school shooting since 20 children and six adults were shot dead at Sandy Hook more than five years ago.

Civic organization Avaaz, the National School Walkout, and other gun control activists made a decision to represent this issue in plain sight, in a way lawmakers couldn't avoid. Avaaz, an global advocacy group, planned the demonstration to honor victims killed since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012.
