Retail job outlook positive

According to the ManpowerGroup Employment Outlook Survey Q2 2018, South African employers report encouraging signs for job seekers in quarter two of 2018.

Manpower's national survey results found employers in every industry sector planning to hire, with leisure and hospitality; professional and business services; and wholesale and retail trade reporting the strongest demand. "In the coming times, technology will change the job market dynamics and individuals need to adopt skillsets to remain employable", said AG Rao, group managing director at ManpowerGroup India. Employers in the Mining & Construction sector report a decline of four percentage points year-on-year, as have those in the Manufacturing sector.

The strong national result is unchanged when compared to the same period a year ago, but declines by three percentage points quarter-on-quarter.

Globally, among the countries and territories featuring seasonally adjusted data, confidence is strongest in Taiwan, Japan, Hungary and the USA, while the weakest hiring prospects are reported in Italy, the Czech Republic and Switzerland, the survey said.

Employers expect to increase staffing levels in all seven industry sectors during the upcoming quarter.

Employers in all four regions expect to increase payrolls during the next three months.

In Richmond, the unemployment rate was just under six per cent, according to a 2016 city report.

[1] The Net Employment Outlook is calculated by subtracting the percentage of employers anticipating a decrease in hiring activity from the percentage of employers anticipating an increase in employment.

The latest data paints a picture of significant differences in hiring expectations across the country, both on a sector-by-sector basis and when compared regionally.

Regional comparisons Staffing levels are expected to increase in all five regions during 2Q 2018. When compared to the same period past year, the outlook remains upbeat despite notable declines in hiring expectations in crucial sectors such as Mining & Construction and Manufacturing. However, employers in the East report an improvement of 8 percentage points. A considerable decline of 14 percentage points is reported in the North, while Outlooks are 5 and 3 percentage points weaker in the South and the West, respectively.

Canadian employers' hiring intentions are at their highest level in several years - and Waterloo Region's employers are even more bullish on growing their teams.

IN employers expect to hire at what ManpowerGroup describes as "a confident pace" in April, May and June, according to survey results released today. 59,000 public and private employers across 44 countries and territories are interviewed to measure anticipated employment trends each quarter.
