Prosecutors to seek death penalty for Florida school shooter

He has been held in the Broward County Jail without bond since the February 14 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland.

The shooting has sparked a fierce national debate over gun rights, with numerous student survivors vowing to push for gun control regulations so that the shooting they lived through might be the last.

While Gov. Rick Scott just signed a new school safety and gun bill into law, the state's Constitution Revision Commission may vote to place gun restrictions on this year's ballot.

Tony Montalto, whose daughter was one of the 17 killed at Stoneman Douglas, asked commissioners at a Tuesday public hearing to put the proposals before voters. He had exited the school he assaulted alongside students, and had wandered away from the scene before getting picked up by a police officer who saw him in a residential neighbourhood. After surgeries, his condition was upgraded to fair, his attorney and the hospital said.

Prosecutors in Broward County, Fla., said Tuesday they would seek a death sentence for Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old charged with the shooting rampage at a Parkland high school last month.

The charges against Cruz - 17 counts of premeditated murder and 17 counts of attempted murder - are to be read out in court on Wednesday.

The boy's intestinal area has been sealed off and he is breathing on his own after being taken off a ventilator, family attorney Alex Arreaza said. The announcement doesn't negate the ability for a plea deal to be reached. His defense attorneys had tried to prevent a death-penalty trial by bargaining with prosecutors for a life sentence in exchange for Cruz's guilty plea.

The defendant was arrested shortly after the shooting at the high school, which is the worst high school shooting in United States history.
