Police investigate new suspicious package sent to MP at Westminster

Ms. Atkins said that letters such as those sent at the weekend would be treated with the "utmost seriousness".

The leaflets, reported in West Yorkshire, Midlands, London, Cardiff, Leicester, Sheffield and Birmingham, carried an image of a dagger with the letters MS, indicating links to so-called Muslim Slayer which targeted mosques in London and the United States past year with similar threats, the Mirror reported.

Muslims members of the British parliament have been sent a series of suspicious packages over the past 24 hours, prompting a response by police.

Two unidentified people were taken to hospital as a precaution following Monday's suspicious package report.

Yasin won his Bedford seat from the Conservatives by 789 votes at the last general election. "Someone out there thinks it is open season on Muslims", said Huq, who represents Ealing central and Acton in south-west London.

'We assessed two people at the scene and took them to hospital'. "It is frightful though, it's really very frightening", she told the Guardian.

"It is to put the frighteners on us but we won't be cowed", Ms Huq said. I'm sure I won't be the last and I'm sure this is part of a pattern of targeting Muslim MPs.

Emergency services were called to Norman Shaw North, a Parliamentary building, just before 1pm on Monday.

Urging people to join their "day of action" next month the letter reads: "They have hurt you, they have made your loved ones suffer".

"We are aware of a potential situation involving a suspicious substance which the Met Police are investigating", a parliamentary spokesperson said.

"This is further to the two items investigated yesterday, both of which were found to be non-harmful", the spokesman said.

Rupa Huq told London newspaper the Guardian the envelope contained a "sticky substance" described by police as "low-level noxious" and a member of her team was taken to hospital as a precaution for opening the letter. The letters are now under investigation by the police.

The Metropolitan Police spokesperson said they do not "tolerate hate crime", and added: "Anyone believes they have been a victim of such an offence we would encourage them to report it to police so it can be fully investigated".

'The incident, which was contained to one room, is in the process of being stood down'.
