PM launches campaign to eradicate TB by 2025

He was speaking at the inauguration of the Delhi End TB Summit here.

In a bid to eradicate tuberculosis from India by the year 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a campaign against the infectious disease.

Modi said the World Health Organisation had declared tuberculosis an emergency 25 years ago and since then several countries have made efforts to eliminate the disease.

He also urged the ministry of health to explore the potential of Ayurveda in treating TB and share the results with other countries. The TB-free India Campaign has launched under the National Strategic Plan for TB Elimination a step ahead in a mission for ending the epidemic by the year 2025. "State governments have a major role to play in elimination of TB from India". The summit would set the stage for the September 2018 United Nations high-level meeting on TB, where for the first time, TB would be discussed in the UN General Assembly at the Heads of State level.

He praised the ground level workers for their hard work and said, "Between TV and TB, it's easier to move away from the latter."TB Survivors can easily influence the disease-affected and they can help out in the programme, Mr Modi said while pointing out to a survivor from Bihar Siddheshwar Kumar Singh, who was sitting in the audience and had earlier shared his story".

"The global target for eliminating TB is 2030, but I announce that the target for India to eliminate TB is 2025, five years before the global target". "Thus strengthening the spirit of cooperative federalism, I have personally written to the State governments to join in this mission", he said.

Citing the examples of Mission Indradhanush and Swachh Bharat, the Prime Minister said that immunization and sanitation coverage has increased drastically in the last four years, therefore a right approach is needed to achieve the targets.

Most of victims of TB in India are the poor and hence every step taken to wipe out TB should be linked directly to their lives, the Prime Minister said adding that the current Union Budget has proposed to set aside US$100 million to provide nutritional support to TB patients.

The summit is hosted by Government of India, WHO South East Asia Regional Office (SEARO) and Stop TB Partnership.

It has been reported that with a fund of Rs 12000 crore over the next three years, NSP aims at every TB patient having access to quality diagnosis, treatment, and support.
