Philadelphia Eagles release TE Brent Celek

The longest tenured Eagle will save the Birds $4 million in cap space.

A fifth-round draft pick in 2007, Celek played all 11 of his National Football League seasons in Philadelphia, missing just one game during that span. Philadelphia employed this somewhat unusual strategy to bring LeGarrette Blount, Chris Long and others into the fold a year ago. Although they have high hopes for Billy Brown, the Eagles will most-likely snag another tight end in the later rounds of the 2018 NFL Draft.

The three other Eagles tight ends now under contract - Billy Brown, Joshua Perkins, and Adam Zaruba - did not play a single regular-season snap for the team in 2017.

The Eagles shared a heartfelt message about Celek's departure, noting that "Brent Celek defines what it means to be a Philadelphia Eagle".

The Philadelphia Eagles have significantly shortened their tight-end depth chart this offseason.

The Eagles diminished Celek's role in the offense over the past two seasons. Brent embodied the City of Philadelphia's temperament and character with his toughness and grit. He has been a huge part of everything we have been building over the last decade, and it is only fitting that he was able to help us win our first Super Bowl last season.

We all know that this business decision was far from personal, as Celek has been an outstanding leader on and off the field for the Eagles. During his Eagles career, Celek totaled 398 catches for 4,998 yards and 31 touchdowns, marking the eighth-most receiving yards and 11th-most receiving touchdowns (tied) in Eagles history. On Monday alone, the Miami Dolphins cut former Seminole star Lawrence Timmons and the Philadelphia Eagles made it known they want one former Nole back.
