Netflix's The Crown paid its queen less than its prince

Actors Claire Foy, who plays Queen Elizabeth II, and Matt Smith who plays Philip Duke of Edinburgh, attend the premiere of "The Crown" Season 2 in London, Britain, November 21, 2017.

Variety released information that reveals that Netflix's The Crown paid Doctor Who actor Matt Smith more than Claire Foy, who plays the titular representation of The Crown, Elizabeth II.

The producers said they've fixed it going into the future, and from now on no one will earn more than the actress playing the queen.

.

According to Variety, on Tuesday, the show's producers said at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem that Foy, who won a Golden Globe for her work on the show past year, made less money than her on-screen husband, actor Matt Smith.

Suzanne Mackie and Andy Harries made the revelation at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem, according to a report by Variety.

She only portrayed Queen Elizabeth for two seasons of "The Crown".

To be fair, Smith also received many award nominations for his work on the show, though it wasn't as resonant a performance as it was for Foy. "Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen", he promised. They said that Smith pulled in a higher paycheck due to his established fame.

"The Crown" is one of the most expensive television shows ever produced, costing a reported $130 million for the first season.

But the pay disparity between Smith and Foy - despite Foy's newcomer status before the show debuted, as the production company noted - sparked outrage from viewers who noted she was the star of the show and deserved better compensation compared to Smith. Her turn in BBC's Wolf Hall earned her a BAFTA nomination, and the series as a whole was a massive critical and commercial success.

Foy, 33, won't reap the benefits of the show's new policy, however, as "The Crown" has re-cast the roles of the royal family for seasons three and four.
