Millennial railcard chaos as site crashes on day one

Chancellor Philip Hammond said in his Budget speech previous year that the railcards would give 4.5 million more young people a third off their rail fares. 10,000 were released this morning, and we're all so desperate for the deals the website crashed.

The 26-30 Railcard won't apply to season tickets, Eurostar, and most London Underground and Docklands Light Railway tickets - unless using Oyster pay-as-you-go. What's this?, but because travelling around is so important to the economy (it means people can get to work, or can visit other places, for example) the government is still quite involved in how it's run and how much those tickets can cost.

So, that has prompted quite a flurry this morning, with National Railcards Twitter saying "the whole team" was working at getting the website back on track. It posted: "Due to the high volume of traffic the 26-30 Railcard website we understand some of you have been unable to access the 26-30 website".

Those unable to get on to the inundated website took to Twitter to vent their frustration at not being able to get hold of the discounts.

Meanwhile, Tom Drury, from London, wrote: "The launch of the new railcard is a shambles".

However, it's not good news for everyone, as the railcard can not be used on season tickets, which many working and commuting young people buy to make daily travel to work slightly cheaper.

However, a £12 minimum fare applies for journeys starting between 4.30am-10am Monday to Friday, excluding Advance Fares.

An RDG spokesman said: "The trial of the 26-30 Railcard is part of the rail industry's long-term plan to change, improve and boost communities by enabling more people to travel by train".

The first trial of the scheme was used on Greater Anglia services, with 10,000 sold.

The website to buy the railcard, which would give eligible travellers a third off fares, crashed within minutes of opening and people aren't happy about it.

The chaos surrounding the railcard's launch will see many disappointed, particularly those at the upper end of the age bracket for whom this was the last chance to enjoy discounted travel until they hit 60 and qualify for a Senior Railcard.
